Frequently Asked Questions (and their answers!)

So far it seems people are pretty happy with the new site and people seem to be handling the new registration process without too much difficulty. If you have questions (that aren't answered here) by all means let us know! We're happy to help.

Here's a list of some questions (and their answers) that RYB has received over the years, and in recent days. We hope they are helpful.

Q. What's the difference between Travel Basketball and Town League?
A. Here's the scoop on Travel Basketball:
  • Travel basketball is offered for boys and girls in grades 4-8 and is the competitive variety of RYB.
  • Tryouts are held and not everybody can be guaranteed a spot on a roster (although we do our best not to turn players away who want to be a bulldog).
  • Teams practice a couple times a week starting in late October or early November.
  • Games start in early December and take place on weekends.
  • Rockland competes against other South Shore league towns.
  • Most grades host some games at RHS or RMS and travel to other towns to play road games. Some younger age groups play all their games out of a single location, like Starland in Hanover.
  • The season runs into March.
And here's the scoop on Town League:

  • Town League is offered to boys and girls in grade 1 (new this year!) through grade 8
  • Grades 1 & 2 will participate in an instructional program. One hour each Saturday from January through March.
  • Grades 3 & 4 will participate in Rookie League. Teams will be formed and teams will practice and play games from December through March.
  • Grades 5 & 6 will participate in Junior League. Teams will be formed and teams will practice and play games from December through March.
  • Grades 7 & 8 will participate in Senior League. Teams will be formed and teams will practice and play games from December through March.
    • These groupings each have a boys and girls leagues. These leagues are NOT co-ed.
    • These grade based groupings are something we want to try to do this year. It's a new set up that we will run if registration numbers allow.
  • Town League is recreational basketball.
  • Everybody who wants to play will be placed on a team
  • You play with and against other Rockland kids.
  • All games take place on Saturdays at RMS or RHS. Instructional takes place at Memorial Park. We may utilize Esten from time to time.
Q. How can I register for your programs?
A. We offer online registration. If you're reading this, you're in the right place. Look for the "Register for RYB" link. Travel registration opens in August. Town League registration in late October or early November.

Q. Do I have to register online?
A. If at all humanly possible... yes. Registering online is the best way to make sure your player is signed up and there is no confusion. If you absolutely can't register online please speak to a member of the RYB Board or email [email protected].

Q. If I'm registering online, you expect me to pay online too?
A. Again, if at all humanly possible... yes. If you just don't have the ability to pay for your registration online via debit or credit card we'll still try to work with you. Once again, reach out to a board member or email [email protected].

Q. OK, you brought up paying... how much is it anyway?
A. Travel basketball is $325.00 for the first player in a household and $150.00 for an additional player. The fee is capped right there at $475.00. Got a whole starting five at home? It will still only cost you $475.00.

Q. What if I can't pay it all now?
A. We have a payment plan available for travel basketball. You can pay a portion now and then make payments at the start of October and November. The additional payments will happen automatically (you'll get a email reminder) on each payment date.

Q. Okay, but what if I really have trouble paying? Times are tough.
A. We don't want financial hardship to stand in the way of somebody playing basketball. We love the game and want to see everybody playing. If you have a legitimate hardship RYB will work with you for either a modified payment plan or even a partial or complete "scholarship".  Contact RYB to discuss what we can do for you. Even if you are going to seek a alternative payment situation, please sign your player up online and just leave the items in your shopping cart.

We'll add to this list as things pop up! Thanks for bearing with us!
